Alberta: To assess the impact of downturn on Alberta’s economy, MaryAnn Mihychuk, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, visited the province today.

Mihchuk held a series of meetings with business and economic leaders, along with Calgary municipal leaders, to redress issues facing the province, major being its rising unemployment rate.

The minister also toured Calgary Economic Development Office, and a Service Canada office to comprehend the gravity of the situation.

Mihchuk sympathized with Albertans facing “tough times” and recognized the efforts they were making to carry on through the challenges.

She said, “I’ve listened and heard from Albertans about the labour market challenges they are up against. I am committed to working with the province and employers to help Albertans get the skills they need for good quality jobs and to strengthen training. In today’s changing economy, Canadians need more opportunities to improve their skills and upgrade their credentials.”

The Minister also reaffirmed her government’s commitment to expanding the Youth Employment Strategy and to improve the EI (Employment Insurance) system which included re-aligning it with the realities of today’s labour market.

Mihychuk was accompanied by Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence and Darshan Kang, MP for Calgary Skyview.
