Gordon McClure’s name will be recommended for the role of Alberta’s Chief Electoral Officer by the Select Special Ethics Commissioner and Chief Electoral Officer Search Committee.
“On behalf of the committee, I would like to thank all applicants for their participation,” said Shane Getson, MLA for Lac Ste. Anne-Parkland and chair of the search committee.
McClure has decades of public service experience in various roles with the Government of Alberta, including serving as an Appeals Coordinator and Chair of the Public Lands Appeal Board for over 10 years. He also holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Victoria.
The Chief Electoral Officer functions as a nonpartisan Officer of the Legislature, with responsibilities governed by the Election Act, Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act, and the Senatorial Selection Act.
Further, he is appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council following the passage of a motion by the Legislative Assembly. It is expected that the motion to recommend McClure will be brought before the Assembly in weeks to come.
If the motion is passed in the Assembly, McClure will replace Glen Resler, the current Chief Electoral Officer. Glen Resler completed his term in May 2024 after 11 years of service and Larae Petrowsky served as the Acting Chief Electoral Officer.
